environmental health resources, heat prevention, clinic support

In partnership with a local clinic in Oaxaca , we funded resources and support focusesd on addressing heat impacts during the summer season. Many community members rely on the local clinic for support which shut down temporarily during covid. Our partnership ensured the clinic could continue providing support to local members and immigrants from central america.

Bonita Salud

Community Resilience

In the midst of a global trend where temperatures increase and younger generations flock to larger cities, leaving the elderly behind in the extreme heat, Loma Bonita stands as a testament to resilience and community spirit. Asenette's family has personally experienced the impact of this generational movement and extreme heat events, inspiring her to collaborate with community leaders and address the challenges faced by the elderly in the face of these larger forces.

A Community-Led Initiative

With the guidance of a dedicated pastor, a community-led shelter or "albergue" has taken on a multifaceted role as a clinic, providing essential support to those in need. Through close collaboration, we have identified additional epidemics affecting our community, including diabetes and homelessness. Together, we have taken action to address these pressing issues.

Action

Through our collaborative efforts, we have been able to equip the albergue with vital supplies that directly address the needs of our community members. These include:

  1. Wheelchairs and Crutches: Providing mobility and independence for amputees and elderly individuals who require mobility assistance.

  2. Hammocks: Offering a comfortable and cooler place to sleep for those without homes, ensuring their dignity and well-being.

  3. Blood Sugar Monitors: Enabling individuals with diabetes to monitor their blood glucose levels regularly, facilitating effective management of their condition.

  4. Blood Pressure Monitors: Supporting the elderly in monitoring their blood pressure and promoting overall cardiovascular health.

Education for Empowerment

Beyond the provision of essential supplies, we understand the importance of knowledge and education in empowering our community. To that end, we have developed instructional manuals for the shelter, designed to educate community members about their health issues. By promoting awareness and understanding, we aim to foster proactive and informed decision-making regarding personal well-being.
